FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How do I donate a vehicle?
There are five easy steps to donate a vehicle to charity:

Step 1 Complete the Donation Form which will provide us with all the information we need to progress your gift. It is in this initial stage that you nominate your charity of choice.

Step 2 Once we receive your Donation Form, we will respond within seven days to discuss what options we have available to us and potentially organise a collection day and time suitable to you.

Step 3 When the carrier collects your vehicle, he/she will provide you with a Collection Receipt. This form acknowledges that we have collected the vehicle with your authority. You will be required to sign this form as authority for us to complete the transaction.

Step 4 The donated item will be delivered to the auction house for assessment along with the appropriate documentation to enable the vehicle to be disposed of. Once the item is sold, your nominated charity will advise you of the successful sale.

Step 5 In due course, which may be 28 days from collection, your nominated charity will issue you with a Donation Receipt for the amount of the sale.

2. What types of vehicles can be donated?
You can donate just about any vehicle: automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, vans, commercial vehicles, jet skis, snowmobiles, caravans, motor homes, buses, trailers and boats.

3. Does the vehicle need to be in working condition?
No, the vehicle does not need to be in working condition. We accept most vehicles running or not, except where the value of the item is less than the cost of towing.

4. Do I need to own the vehicle I wish to donate?
Yes, you must have or be able to get clear title, meaning you own the vehicle. Also, the vehicle must not be encumbered in anyway - there mustn’t be any money owing on the item. Registered or unregistered? It is best that you de-register the vehicle and/or remove the plates from the vehicle. If you offer and we accept the vehicle in a registered condition you will need to complete the relevant transfer documents, safety certificate, etc available from your relevant State Transport Authority.

5. How do you determine the value of my donation?
Our current method for disposing of vehicles is by auction through Dominion Auctioneers. The value of you vehicle will be the amount it earns from a completed sale/auction. In some cases the vehicle may only have wrecking value. In this situation, if we choose to accept the donation, the value will be the amount paid by the wreckers for the vehicle.

6. Is there any cost to me?
No, there is not cost for making a vehicle donation through us. The cost of towing and disposal of your vehicle is covered by the sale/auction price.

7. Is my donation tax deductible?
The charities involved are non-profit corporations, so your donation should be tax deductible. You will receive a formal letter and receipt from your chosen charity for the actual price achieved at auction or sale. Our costs are not taken from this receipted amount. For personal benefits and how this suits your own position, we recommend you consult your tax advisor.

QUICK REFERENCE: What does the ATO consider to be a gift?

For a donor to claim a tax deduction for a gift it must be truly a gift; be made to a deductible gift recipient (DGR);
be a gift of money or property that is covered by a gift type; and comply with any relevant gift conditions.

For deductions: claims are made in the tax return for the income year in which the gift is made;
certain claims can be spread over a period of up to five years; the amount that is deductible for the gift
is subject to special rules; the claim cannot add to or create a tax loss; donors need to keep records;
and there may be other income tax consequences (including capital gains and decline in value).
