The
Cerebral Palsy League aims to empower people with cerebral palsy and related
disabilities to lead valued lives as respected and equal members of society,
within their family and community.
Cerebral palsy is the name given to a condition which affects the way
the brain controls the muscles of the body. This results in difficulties
in movement and posture. Cerebral palsy has different causes, and affects
each person differently, therefore people with cerebral palsy have varying
individual needs. Cerebral palsy is not hereditary, it can occur in any
family and there is no cure.
It is estimated that in Australia, another child is born with cerebral
palsy every 18 hours. It is the most expensive childhood disability to
manage. The League provides specialised services to more than 2600 children
and adults throughout the state. The focus of services is to assist people
with cerebral palsy and related disabilities to reach their goals including
educational attainment, independent living, meaningful employment and
participating and contributing within their community.
